Leaders Lay Hospital and Medical Center Time Capsule   AUP Wins Grand Prize in PLDT-DPC Visual Arts Contest

Leorido “Onyok” Repique Jr.
A senior Fine Arts student bagged the grand prize of 75,000 pesos cash in PLDT-DPC (Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. and Directories Philippines Corporation) annual visual arts contest on February 1, 2007. Aside from the prize money, Onyok’s work will be printed on the covers of the three telephone directory books and yellow pages of PLDT, with the distinction of having his name, picture and name of his school, AUP printed inside. “Onyok’s” entry was an oil painting on bronze. Melanie Acquioben and Rommel Belga also Fine Arts students won 5,000 pesos each for Honorable Mention of their oil paintings on canvass. A total of 30,000 pesos worth of art equipment was awarded to AUP as the winning school. Chair of the Fine Arts department is Ruben Abaya Pagaduan.
The time capsule laying of the AUP Hospital and Medical Center was held on February 11. The 7 hectare AUP property is located along the perimeters fence near Muzon facing the national highway. During the laying ceremony, vehicles passing by would slow-down or stop to read the billboard “On this site will soon rise the AUP Hospital and Medical Center”.

Elder Richard McEdwards, Adventist Mission Director gave a message about the hospital being a place where people would come for physical as well as spiritual healing. Other speakers were Prof. Dina Galang who said the opening prayer, Dr. Robin Saban, AUP President who gave the welcome remarks, Dr. Querubin Padilla, Hospital Project Director who presented an overview of the hospital; and Pastor Abner Roque, NPUM President who gave the dedicatory prayer and who also presented the members of the Board of Trustees that approved the building of a hospital in AUP as an immediate resolve to the problem of the CON. Pastor Nelson Castillo, NPUM Education Director led in the closing prayer, and Mr. Leomer Batulayan, AUP director of CES, PR, and coordinator of the 90th anniversary celebration served as Master of Ceremony. The Music Dept. provided the musical numbers as the AUP cafeteria prepared refreshments.

It was providential that Pastor Ben Martin was also requested to say a few words   about   AUP   and   the  hospital

project. Pastor and Mrs. Martin of EASNAC were just passing by looking for a place where to set up a wellness program. They were attracted by the sign board and the gathering of people in the area so they decided to join the crowd. Pastor Ben also disclosed that he was PUC’s business manager when the 165 hectare Silang property was bought in 1972 at 2.50 pesos/square meter.

Items placed inside the time capsule were the newspaper of the day, the 2007 AUP Calendar, the minutes and board action documents, some current coins and other items. Holding the ropes of the time capsule were the members of the Board, NPUM officers, AUP administrators, the college deans, and Elementary and Academy principals. AUP faculty, students and friends from the villages were in attendance. Laying of the Hospital and Medical Center cornerstone is set on August 3, 2007.

Alumni of Maryland Cheer Working Students
Synthesized from the memoirs of Mrs. Gloria Pangilinan-Baylon

When “the Silang Pioneers” PUC/AUP most of them composed of Academy Class of 1979 celebrated its 25th anniver-sary in March, 2004, Ellen Joy Baylon-Yutuc from Maryland, and daughter of Pastor and Mrs. Leo Baylon joined the group. Pastor and Mrs. Baylon who were both working students during their academy and college days expressed their burden to Ellen on how to help the AUP working students.
With the concern in mind Ellen and her husband Lloyd R. Yutuc who has been the president of the alumni chapter in Maryland since then conceived a bright idea that eventually turned into a full-term project, so in December 2004 and 2005 the PUC/AUP alumni of Maryland, FACA (Filipino-American Christian Association), and friends responded to the call for help. As a result 344 working students received 500 pesos each in 2004. Another group of 315 students each received a crispy 500 peso-bill in 2005.
Students expressed that it was the first time they received a 500 peso bill for Christmas. Others were thankful they had been able to spend Christmas with their family because fare was provided; still others bought fruits and nutritious food to treat themselves.
In July, 2006 when Lloyd and Ellen with their daughters, Nicole and Katherine spent a few days vacation in AUP they were met with grateful recipients. Then another bright idea came into mind; they thought of giving gifts in kind to supply their needs.
In January, 2007 more than 600 working and self-cook students received a generous supply of laundry and bath soaps, toothpaste and face towels. The working self-cook students received four kilos of rice and vegetarian canned goods in addition to other items
Ariel B. Celis, president of the Working Students Association (WSA) expresses gratefulness: “On behalf of the working students I would like to thank Ma’am Ellen and Sir Lloyd Yutuc for patiently campaigning for donations and to all our benevolent donors. I also thank Pastor and Mrs. Baylon for their time and effort in organizing and distributing these goods. May you continue to remember us; we have you in our prayers and may God bless you abundantly, materially and spiritually!”

Janna started singing in public when she was 2 & 1/2 years old. Since then, until now, her schedule is pretty booked. We've been going to different churches every Sabbath just for her singing. She has been featured to Ellen Degeneres show (channel 4) when she was 4 years old. She has a lot of TV appearances as well. She's been singing on Weddings, birthdays, funeral, fund raising and many more. She was included in Tsunami and Katrina victims fund raising here is US hosted by Red Cross. She's been to Europe as well. I can truly say that God blessed me and my family tremendously. Specially with my kids. The talent of music that He gave my kids are really a great tool for them to be used to glorify His name. They been doing mini concerts every where here in CA. We've been getting a lot of invitations from diffirent churches, even non SDA. We are so amazed on how words spread so fast, that a lot of our invites are from people that we don't know. It's either, someone recommeded us to them or they saw us performed. So far, my kids are enjoying what they've been doing and they always remember that everytime they sing, it is always for the glory of God, and they always reminded that they are using the talent/s that God gave them.

This year’s theme is Campus Journalism at the Crossroads of Socio-Political Change. UV’s entry had the theme “Unrealistic Reality” which criticizes superhero and fantasy programs; and artists taking challenges on reality shows on TV as viewers idolize them and treat them as gods. Two years ago, UV also won major prizes in the Luzon-wide but last school year despite 6 major awards in the regional conference, it did not place in the Luzon-wide because the paper did not jibe with the conference theme. This time it was a welcome comeback. According to Lanie, one of the UV writers, “Winning is a bonus, to the primary goal of sharing our publications, up-dating our writing skills and making new friends, but next year we will work even harder to improve our publications, especially in news writing not only for regional and Luzon-wide contests but most of all for the glory of God.”
University Voice Wins 7 Awards in Presscon
Out of more than 40 student publications represen-ting more than 40 colleges and universities from the 7 regions of Luzon, AUP’s University Voice garnered 7 awards in the 6th Luzon-wide Press Conference hosted this year by Region IV-A in Tagaytay City on February 6-9, 2007. Only the top ten publications in each category were awarded as their respective representa-tives were called on stage to receive either certificates or plaques.

UV was judged 2nd Best Editorial Page, 5th Best Feature Page, and 5th Best Page Design. The publication also placed 6th in Best Cover Design 7th in Best DevCom Page, 8th in Best Literary Page, and 7th in Best Page design of its folio. The Luzon-wide Press Conference is organized yearly by the Association of Luzon-wide Tertiary Press Advisers (ALTPA) under the Office of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and is the largest Tertiary campus journalism contest in the country which features lectures on the various sections of the student paper aside from the contest. Major resource person was Isagani Yambot, Publisher of the Daily Inquirer, one of the country’s leading Broadsheets. Plans are being laid for a National Presscon next collegiate year.
UV’s delegates include Pat De Vera, Deomie Lynn Rivamonte, Leilanie Fronda, Irene Mirasol, John Dean Adap, Kemuell Kevin Lagrada, and Lucky Evardome with this year’s adviser, Elmie Lynn Lagajino. A total of 900 delegates joined the conference. UV Editor-in- chief is Nahum Cheer De Jonggoy, (BS DevCom IV).

This short video was prepared by a sheriff's office in Florida but is certainly appropriate no matter where we live. New concepts of thievery have a way of spreading. It just takes two minutes but I'm sure you won't think your time is wasted.
Stay safe!
